The Life of the (Tupperware) Party!!! Plus a Cake to Take to that Party!

Spring has FINALLY somewhat sprung here in NYC!! I'm usually more of a fall girl, but this winter has been sooo long that I'm actually excited for the spring!

I was browsing through PBS's website and came upon a super cute documentary on Tupperware called "Tupperware"!!!! Yes, Tupperware!!! I KNOW you remember Tupperware, well if you were born in the 80s or before.

The documentary was actually pretty good. It was all about how Tupperware (and those iconic Tupperware) parties came to be.

It seems that in the early 50s, after the WWII, Tupperware gave women a way to continue to make their own money while still taking care of the home. Husbands had returned from war and wives were expected to go back into the kitchen. Women had had a small taste of independence and self sufficiency while the men were away and wanted to keep it. Tupperware and it's parties let them do this. Not to mention, a good Tupperware party the social event of the week for most women!! You could get together with the neighborhood women and earn money (or spend it) all at the same time.

 (Pic from Reminisce Magazine)

Those bowls with that familiar "burp"ing sound became a way for women to make money to get the things they wanted. Tupperware even provided incentives to their representatives.  Throw 5 parties get a blender. Throw 10 parties?? Get a refrigerator!!

Headed by Brownie Wise, the average Tupperware sales person was a middle or working class housewife. Tupperware parties consisted of demos of how to use the handy housewares and gave homemakers a way to become sophisticated businesswomen. Tupperware ladies were ladies and would NEVER be seen in anything other than white gloves, high heels and hats. Oh and STOCKINGS!!! It was said that some women were trolloping about without pantyhose (gasp)!!!

So in honor of Tupperware, I thought I would bake a cake that would probably have been brought to a Tupperware party. In a cute little 1950s Tupperware cake carrier of course!!!

Coca Cola Cake!!!!

Ummmmm... YUM!!! I wasn't sure how I would like this cake but it turned out soooo yummy!!!

It has everything it shouldn't in it, including Coca Cola AND marshmallows. It's incredibly tasty though.

I first saw the recipe on the blog A Cake Bakes in Brooklyn. After a little more research I learned that the cake dates back to the 1950s and was southern. PERFECT for me!!! Although how I have never tried this cake being from the South I don't know... I knew I had to try it but how can a cake made of Coca Cola (which is by far my least favorite drink) be tasty? I don't know... but it is!!!

I didn't use the recipe from A Cake Bakes in Brooklyn because I didn't have enough butter. I used this recipe from Baking Bites, which uses a little less butter (all I had was two sticks).

Here is what I did (a brief summary. If it looks like it's up your ally try the recipe!)

Combined the coca powder, Coca Cola, eggs, butter and vanilla

Put in the dry ingredients, add marshmallows and pour into a greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

While the cake is baking prepare the glaze. It basically has the same ingredients as the cake, minus the mallows, with a few walnuts added. I used walnuts but the recipe calls for pecans. I'm completely out of baking supplies so we only had walnuts in the pantry.

Take the cake out and pour glaze over while it's is still hot!!! Mmmmmm...

Finished product!!!

Super simple and super yummy!!!! Try it if you have the time!

How was your Wednesday? Is it spring where you are? I guess the bigger, most important question is did you make anything yummy today??

Viva Las Vegas Roundup PART 2!! Saturday and Sunday!!

And here is the second (and last...until next year) part to our Viva Las Vegas adventure. There are a lot more photos so I'll spare you lengthy text were possible.  Brace yourself... Have a cup of tea or a snack... Its a long one...

ok...

Where did I leave off?

Ahhh...Saturday... Car Show Day!!!!

Here is the outfit for that day.

It's not vintage but it was SUPER hot out and (I don't know if it's from being a dancer or having a high metabolism or what but...) I'm a sweaty girl. I've had issues with sweaty hands  for as long as I can remember. I thought that repro would be better than risking gross perspiration stains on my pretty vintage things. So I went with a pin up look instead. I liked it. The dress was light weight and a little short. I was comfortable and most importantly, dry!

Here is Honey's look for the day. She doesn't really dress vintage OR rockabilly but she was getting compliments on her look the whole trip!!

So, the car show was much more interesting than I thought it would be. I mean, I LOVE vintage cars, but I wasn't sure what to expect. There were tons of cars to take a gander at as well as loads of vendors selling all kinds of things!

This is when I ran into Technicolor Cutie!!! I recognized her right away! She was wearing the cutest Snow White skirt!! I always love her clothes! How adorable is she?

After some walking and A LOT of lemonade it was time to find a spot where it would be easy to see LITTLE RICHARD!!!! We opted for the bleachers. I loathe standing in crowds especially since it was 85 degrees out. I guess I picked the perfect spot because my Facebook friend, Jasmine, was able to easily find us in all the hullabaloo! I adore Jasmine. She's the sweetest thing ever. Don't let the sweet face fool you. She can be feisty when need be!!

Once sunset rolled around the place got PACKED and I was glad we went for bleacher seating!

Then...it was time... LITTLE RICHARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (crowd going wild!!!)

He was brought out in a wheel chair, and his voice was a little weak (after all he IS in his 80s), but the songs are still great. We were swaying and head bopping the entire set. To be in the presence of the history of this man was enough for me!

After the performance we headed back to the hotel for a quick dinner, and wardrobe change.

I didn't get a photo of the dress I wore but it was a haltered, full skirt dress. Definitely good for dancing...although we didn't. Honey got sick (a combination of the body heat and too many cocktails) at the end of Si Cranstoun's set so we left around 1:30 am. But... here at least is the hair and makeup.

SUNDAY: The pool party and LAST DAY...  :(

If you've been following the blog you know that I became obsessed with a 1950s Abercrombie and Fitch swimsuit. When I got it in my clutches I was the happiest, newbie vintage girl EVERRRR!!!
So here it is!!

HOW CUTE IS IT!!! It's such a great style I'm convinced it would look good on anyone!

The pool party was one of my favorite parts to the weekender. It really was like stepping back in time. Everyone had on their best vintage (or retro) swimwear. There was great hair and accessories. There was sun. There was water... It was great!!! The weather was perfect. It was windy, warm enough to show off your suit but not so hot that you were sweating... PERFECT!

As soon as Honey and I made it poolside I was approached by BEAUTIFUL pinup models Angelique Noire and Ashleeta to take a photo with them!!! I was stoked but terrified. What regular person WANTS to take pictures with actual models???? But I think it came out pretty good!

Here I am again with the lovely Technicolor Cutie!

The pool area was packed! Luckily we ran into Wendi's (Haute Rockabilly Fashionista) friend Teresa who rescued us and swept us away to their corner of the pool party!!

How cute is HRF??? LOVED her bating suit!

Here is a super cute video of HRF and her friend jiving at the pool party!! I LOVE this video!

Here is Honey in the water!

And the beautiful ladies from the swimsuit competition...

(HANG IN THERE!!! I'M ALMOST DONE!!!!!)

After the pool party it was time to change into evening clothes for the last events of the weekender. The Jive Competition and Nikki Hill (there were more bands but this is all we had energy for)

The dresses...

I was SOOOOO excited when we walked into The Orleans and saw my Facebook friend April!! I had been looking for her ALLLLLLL weekend!!!

I can't say enough amazing things about this girl! She's fabulous. She's one of the first people I "met" when I decided I wanted to slowly get into vintage styling. She's been nothing but supportive and helpful and I love her like we've known each other for years (even though this was our first in- person meeting)! She has some terrific Youtube tutorials for hair and makeup!

I don't have any photos from the jive competition but I DO have a little video!!!

This was the final 3 couples. The blonde in the black and white skirt and her partner in the T-shirt won... And guess what... They're from NYC!!!! I see them whenever we go to Rebel Night here, which is a once monthly Rockabilly night in NYC.

Then it was NIKKI HILL time!! Oh MY GOODNESS did she ROCK IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!! If you haven't heard her stuff RUN and check out her web page!! You won't regret it!!!

We ended the night with a nice dinner with Wendi. I really got to know her well and I sooo glad I did! I love the friends I've made so far on this venture. I really am grateful that I found out about the vintage/rockabilly scene. I've met nothing but kind people, and that's not something that happens everyday!!!

We really did have fun on our vacation. I have heard some veteran Viva goers saying that they didn't like it this year and that it wasn't the same as years past. That may be true but for me it was great. But really, Honey and I are glass- half- full kind of people and can have fun if you gave us a paper bag and a rubber band!!!!!!

It was definitely a successful first Viva. And certainly not my last! We already have plans to return next year. This time we're taking friends!!!!

Loads of hugs to you all!!!!

Viva Las Vegas 16 Roundup! Part 1 (Wednesday-Friday)

So here it is!!! My long awaited (at least for me!) Viva roundup part 1!!!

So... Let's just dive right in shall we?!

The Scoop:

So we arrived  in Las Vegas on Wednesday after a LOOONNNG flight. Well, at least it felt long. I actually have a tremendous fear of flying. I fly because I refuse to let a stupid fear keep me from living my life, but I ABSOLUTELY hate it...

Anyway, enough of that. After we arrived we had brunch and checked into our hotel. We didn't stay at The Orleans because it was completely booked. We were on the wait list but didn't take it when they called because they only had a room for 3 days. We were in Vegas a total of 6!!

After all of that we unpacked,  took naps and then headed out to see Cee Lo Green's Vegas show "Loberace". A super fun, super sexy show that a former student of mine was dancing in. I wanted to snatch her off the stage a few times but it was a great show and a great way to start a long weekend in Vegas!

Soooo... on to Thursday... The first day of Viva!!

We woke up kind of early because I didn't want to be in a long line to get wristbands. But... by the time both of us got dressed and had brunch it was a little later than expected but that was fine. We were on vacation!!!!

Here was my day dress for Thursday

Super comfortable. Which is what I needed after the long day we had Wednesday!!

After we left the hotel we went straight to The Orleans!!!

Once inside we immediately bumped into Melanie from Incediary Blonde!!! I'm totally embarrassed to say that I didn't recognize her at first glance. But I think she caught me by surprise since I actually didn't expect anyone to recognize me!!! I've only been blogging for a little while so I assumed I would just blend in. Of course (as always when meeting new people) I was awkward and shy and probably a nerd and forgot to get a photo with her (ugh). But she was super nice and super pretty!!! I'm still mortified that I didn't get a pic!!

After getting wristbands, which didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would, we went upstairs to Sweet Pea's Hooch and Smooch.  The Hooch and Smooch was basically just a meet and greet so that you could get to see who all was there and ease your way into the festivities. We weren't there 5 minutes when Wendi from Haute Rockabilly Fashionista came running up to me!! She was so friendly she put me at ease right away!!! She was with two of her friends who were also just as friendly and chatty. We all became fast friends!

(from left to right: Wendi's friend Teresa, Wendi, Honey, Me)

-Oh! I just realized this is the first pic of Honey I've ever put up!-

Unfortunately, our camera died shortly after so this is all of the pics I have of Thursday. Not much happened though. We stayed at the meet and greet for a while then went to dinner. We were so tired from travel that we called it an early night and went back to our room to prepare for the next day. There was a lot of hair setting and steaming clothes to do!

So on to...

FRIDAY!!!

Friday morning was filled with the same as the day before. We had an early rise since we went to bed so early the night before. We were FINALLY rested!!! Brunch, then off to The Orleans...

Friday's day dress (yes, you've seen it before)

Here is the hair!! I'm SUUPPEERR proud of how my hair looked all weekend. I think the dry air helped a lot. I'm hoping I can recreate these styles here in NYC!

The first event of the day was the "Secrets in Lace" Viva Las Vegas Fashion show

Wendi and Teresa were actually in the fashion show!! For some reason my camera was acting dumb so every pic I took of them came out super dark so... no pics of them... sad face...

Later that night was the FANTASTIC VLV Burlesque show!!! Goodness! The show was filled with beautiful women and great entertainment. If you are in any way a prude (which I'm sure NO ONE who attends Viva is) this show was definitely not for you. It was the dirtiest, most inappropriately delicious burlesque show ever, and I loved every dirty minute of it!!

There, of course, was no photo taking allowed in the show so you have to be satisfied with an evening outfit photo!!

Honey, fluffing her hair

A few shots of the Burlesque band

Afterwards was time for (attempted) gambling!!!! Geez we stink at that stuff... I gave up early...

We ran into these pretty ladies. We were all gushing over the other's dresses! So of course it was picture time!!!

Then back upstairs for some dancing!!!!!

This couple was amazing!! We watched them every time they got up to take a turn around the floor!! There was sooo much good dancing at Viva. It inspired Honey and I to get serious about practicing!

After a long night we ran into a fellow Brooklyn-ite!!! We've been Facebook friends for a while but this was our first ever in real life meeting!!! How cute is she!! Her hair look fab the entire weekend!!!

So there you have it...Days Wednesday through Friday in a nutshell!!! It is actually all a fabulous blur so I'm sure I'm forgetting some things...

I'll put up Saturday-Monday in a couple of days!!! That one will include the car show, Little Richard,  Si Cranstoun (dreamy), the pool party and more!!!

xoxo
